MTC’s Broadway season at the Samuel J. Also part of MTC's Broadway season will be the Broadway premiere of THE OTHER PLACE by Sharr White, directed by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, starring three-time Emmy Award winner and Tony nominee Laurie Metcalf.

MTC’s Off-Broadway season at New York City Center – Stage I (131 West 55th Street) will begin this fall with the New York premiere of GOLDEN AGE, the new play by four-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally (Master Class, The Lisbon Traviata, Love! Valour! Compassion!), directed by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie (Venus in Fur, Chicago, The Submission). The cast will include two-time Emmy and two-time Tony Award winner Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago, The Addams Family, "Cheers") and Drama Desk Award winner Lorenzo Pisoni (Humor Abuse at MTC, Measure for Measure, Equus).

ON BROADWAY AT MTC’S SAMUEL J. FRIEDMAN THEATRE

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE
By HENRIK IBSEN
A new version by REBECCA LENKIEWICZ
Directed by DOUG HUGHES
with BOYD GAINES and RICHARD THOMAS

Previews Begin: Tuesday, September 4, 2012
Opening Night: Thursday, September 27, 2012

Tony winner Doug Hughes (Doubt, The Royal Family, The Whipping Man, Defiance) returns to MTC to direct a fresh and provocative version of Henrik Ibsen’s AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE, starring four-time Tony winner Boyd Gaines (The Columnist, Contact, The Heidi Chronicles) and Golden Globe and Emmy winner Richard Thomas (Race, Democracy, Fifth of July).

When Dr. Thomas Stockmann (Boyd Gaines) discovers toxic contamination in the water used at the local baths, he expects to be hailed as a hero. But since the baths are the town’s main source of revenue, the community fights to silence him… and Dr. Stockmann learns that there are forces more powerful than truth. An incisive tale about the high price of free expression, AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE makes a timely return to the New York stage in this bold new version by one of Britain’s most exciting young writers, Rebecca Lenkiewicz.

In addition to Gaines as Dr. Thomas Stockmann, Richard Thomas will play Peter Stockmann mayor of the town and brother of Dr. Thomas Stockmann.

Additional casting and creative team for AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE will be announced shortly.

THE OTHER PLACE

By SHARR WHITE
Directed by JOE MANTELLO
with LAURIE METCALF

Previews Begin: Tuesday, December 11, 2012
Opening Night: Thursday, January 10, 2013

Three-time Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Laurie Metcalf ("roseanne," "The Big Bang Theory," November, currently in Long Day's Journey into Night in London's West End, and a founding ensemble member of Steppenwolf Theatre Company) stars in MTC's Broadway-premiere production of THE OTHER PLACE, a riveting new thriller by fast-rising playwright Sharr White and directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Other Desert Cities, Wicked, Love! Valour! Compassion!).

Metcalf gives a “dazzling, must-be-seen performance” (Variety) as Juliana Smithton, a successful neurologist whose life seems to be coming unhinged. Her husband has filed for divorce, her daughter has eloped with a much older man and her own health is in jeopardy. But in this brilliantly crafted work, nothing is as it seems. Piece by piece, a mystery unfolds as fact blurs with fiction, past collides with present and the elusive truth about Juliana boils to the surface.

THE OTHER PLACE had its world premiere at MCC Theater (Robert LuPone, Bernard Telsey, William Cantler, Artistic Directors; Blake West, Executive Director), opening on March 28, 2011 where it extended due to popular demand. THE OTHER PLACE was nominated for two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a Drama League Award, and three Lucille Lortel Awards. Metcalf won an Obie Award and a Lucille Lortel Award for her performance in the production.

Additional casting and creative team for MTC's new production of THE OTHER PLACE will be announced shortly.

MTC AT NEW YORK CITY CENTER – STAGE I

GOLDEN AGE
New York premiere by TERRENCE McNALLY
Directed by WALTER BOBBIE
with BEBE NEUWIRTH and LORENZO PISONI

Previews Begin: Tuesday, November 13, 2012
Opening Night: Thursday, December 4, 2012

Four-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally adds another memorable cast of characters to MTC's Stage I with the New York premiere of GOLDEN AGE. Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie (Chicago, Venus in Fur) directs. The cast will include two-time Emmy and two-time Tony Award winner Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago, The Addams Family, "Cheers") and Drama Desk Award winner Lorenzo Pisoni (Humor Abuse at MTC, Measure for Measure, Equus).

It's opening night of Vincenzo Bellini's new opera I Puritani in Paris and the Italian composer is determined to win the adulation of not only his audience, but his colleagues and rivals as well. When the curtain falls, will a thunderous ovation cement his prominence? Or has Bellini unwittingly composed his own swan song?

Blending 21st century language and humor with the timeless beauty of 19th century bel canto opera, GOLDEN AGE portrays the final act of an artist whose desire for greatness has eclipsed all else.

Casting and creative team for GOLDEN AGE will be announced shortly.

THE MADRID

World premiere play by LIZ FLAHIVE
Directed by LEIGH SILVERMAN
with EDIE FALCO

Previews Begin: Tuesday, February 5, 2013
Opening Night: Thursday, February 26, 2013

Four-time Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie,” The House of Blue Leaves, “The Sopranos”) returns to the New York stage in the world premiere of THE MADRID by Liz Flahive (From Up Here).

Falco stars as Martha, a kindergarten teacher with a life many would want: a loving husband, a devoted daughter. But when she leaves it all behind, it’s up to her daughter Sarah to pick up the pieces. Two-time Obie winner, Leigh Silverman (Chinglish, From Up Here, In the Wake) directs this hilarious and heartbreaking story about motherhood, freedom, and trying to see the people in your family as they really are.

THE MADRID was commissioned through the Bank of America New American Play Program.

THE EXPLORERS CLUB
World premiere play by NELL BENJAMIN

Previews Begin: Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Opening Night: Tuesday, June 4, 2013

A new madcap comedy from Tony-nominated writer Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde).

London, 1879. The prestigious Explorers Club faces the worst crisis in their history: their acting president wants to admit a woman, and their bartender is terrible.

True, the female candidate is brilliant, beautiful and has discovered a legendary Lost City, but the decision to let in a woman could shake the very foundation of the British Empire, and how do you make such a decision without a decent drink?

Grab your safety goggles for some very mad science involving deadly cobras, irate Irishmen and the occasional airship.

THE EXPLORERS CLUB is a recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award.

Director, casting, and creative team for THE EXPLORERS CLUB will be announced shortly.
